The answer to the question, “Is everyone an author?” can best be
answered by first defining what an author is.
In the book Everyone Is An Author they state that until recently “an author was someone whose work had been published.” An
author is very closely associated with writing. The ability to put to pen and
paper (computer?) thoughts, ideas, opinions, and instruction into the written
(or digital) word in a forum that makes those ideas available to others is a
more accurate idea of what most think of as an author.
In
order to answer the question “Is everyone an author?” I would take the
understanding of what an author is even further. An author is one who expresses
thought and makes it available to others usually through written word. An author
is essentially a creator or an artist by this definition, which means everyone
is an author. Those who have heard the philosophical idea that we are all
authors of our own destiny would take no issue with this new definition of
author. The idea that our thoughts, which manifest through our choices and made
available for others to see through our actions is what makes us all authors. The expression of thought made available to an audience is the very work of an
author. This suggests every blog post, status update, email, or even video post;
which are all forms of expression or communication of the thought of the writer
made available through these mediums, are the very work and act of being an
author.
